Learning Tracks

At the opening of the symposium, we will be sorting dogs and their handlers into learning tracks based on experience and capability. Each track will include 8 working sessions (2 each day), a combination of core classroom sessions and elective classes/workshops.

We have designed a herding and a tending curriculum for each track. As the week progresses, you and your dog will be allowed to move up and down in skill levels or across herding & tending as necessary. You can substitute a working session to audit a class at a higher level than your dog is currently working.

Green Track

Green Track is for those who are just starting to learn about herding & tending—classes are taught by instructors who focus on building strong foundations and establishing safe working habits.

Green Track core classroom sessions introduce new exhibitors to herding competition venues (AKC, AHBA, ASCA, FCI) and stock-related issues, including: Beginner’s Guide to Tests, Herding Terminology, How Dogs Learn, Stock Psychology, and the Novice Walking Tour to Trialing.

Green Track Stock Dogs

(Aussies, Cattledogs, Border Collies, Collies, Corgi’s, Rotties, Bouviers, Shelties, etc.)

Introduction to the Bubble coursework helps handlers and stock dogs develop spatial awareness, understand livestock flight zones, practice stops and call-offs, and learn basic techniques for controlled movement.

Green Track Tending Breeds

(German Shepherd Dogs, Belgians, Briards, Beaucerons, Picards, Dutch Shepherds, etc.)

Introduction to Tending coursework helps handlers and tending dogs acknowledge an “artificial bubble” (the border), develop self-control, refine stops and call-offs, and build safe working habits.

Blue Track

Blue Track classes are designed for handlers who understand herding fundamentals and whose dogs are working off lead at the PT / Started level.

Core classroom sessions focus on course mechanics, with elective sessions and introductory trial courses for both stock dog herding and tending training.

Blue Track Stock Dogs

Continue developing self-control and rating livestock to achieve fluid movement and control, with introductions to obstacles, gathers, and pen work.

Blue Track Tending Breeds

Roadwork, larger grazes, reliable stops, and advanced pen work.

Orange Track

Orange Track is for handler/dog teams working at intermediate and advanced levels—honing skills and building confidence with more complex concepts.

Core classroom sessions include course mechanics and trial strategy for teams developing a competitive edge, plus Apprentice Judge Prep classes.

Orange Track Stock Dogs

Working at a distance, driving away and co-driving, penning, sorting, and the shed.

Orange Track Tending Breeds

Work sessions focus on perfecting placement, the narrow graze, larger gathers, and building initiative.

We are continuing the focus on European Traditional Style Herding techniques. The Smietanas bring extensive experience as professional shepherds to the symposium faculty and will be teaching the tending sessions during the week.

They will also present a lecture on herding programs in Europe on Thursday afternoon, along with sheep management in Germany. Come learn about shepherding on the other side of the globe—classes will be popular, so register early (space is limited).

Instructor

Val Manning

Val's interest in herding started when working as a Pet Food Specialist for Farmland Industries in the late 80's and early 90's. During this time, Farmland was the official Pet Food of The Meeker Classic, The National Western Stock Show and other trials in Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas. At that time - very few people were trialing with upright dogs, and fewer with German Shepherds. In 1995, Val finished her first conformation champion - CH Hickory Hill's Excalibur "Magic" and decided that the next goal would be to compete in herding. She and Magic started working with Jerry Rowe that June, and started trialing in October. Since that time, Terra Norte' GSD's have been both conformation champions and herding dogs. In 2004 with the help of Hildy Morgan, Jerry Rowe and others - Val started Rancho Terra Norte' and the Northern Colorado Herding Cooperative was established.

Working with beginning students and their dogs is highly rewarding. While most trainers can take a dog and trial successfully, it takes a Coach to teach the owner how to herd and build on the relationship between dog & handler. Diversity is what builds a better mousetrap - Val has been successful in helping GSD's, Aussies, BCs, Rotties, Collies, Belgians, Briards, and Cattledogs and their owners herd proficiently and achieve success in the herding arena or field. She is both an AKC and AHBA herding judge.

Instructor

Liane Ehrich

Liane Ehrich has worked with livestock and dogs for her entire life.

She took her first herding lesson in 2003 with a mixed breed, and since that time has immersed herself in stock dogs, stock dog breeds, and handling the various types of stock faced at local trials and ranches in the West. Liane opened her dog training business, Empire Ridge Ranch, first as an opportunity to provide stock dog training and then as a means to help people cope with the many difficulties encountered when a herding dog's needs are not appropriately met.

Liane hosted the Miniature American Shepherd Nationals herding trial for 2020 (held in 2021), as well as the Canaan Dogs Nationals instinct testing in 2021, she and her dogs have been invited to demonstrate stock handling at AKC events, and Liane was invited to judge the Legacy Class at the Border Collie Specialty in Arizona in 2023.

Liane lives in Vail, Arizona with her husband, flocks of geese and sheep, three cows, a couple of chickens, six herding dogs, and a livestock guardian dog.

Instructor

Hana Fullmer

Hana Fullmer trains all breeds and all levels at SummerNY Ranch, owned by Cathy Sumeracki, in Ignacio, Colorado.

Hana brings real life experience to herding training as she owns and operates Tierra Vida Farm and Tierra Vida Ranch. Managing, rotating, and grazing animals is part of the soil health and fertility program for both of her businesses. Her dog Zoey is her most valuable employee and her puppy Ace has begun his training.

Hana believes strongly in utilizing as much of a dog's innate ability as possible. Her methods are focused on ensuring that dogs are accountable for their own behavior (in life and work) so that we, as handlers, have to manage them as little as possible.

As a trainer, Hana is patient and soft spoken. Her gift is the ability to explain herding so her students can understand it. Herding can be difficult to grasp and Hana makes it easy.

Outside of farming and training, you will find her at herding trials, hiking mountains, and camping with her dogs and husband.

Hotels and Nearby Attractions

Lodging, camping, airports, and regional attractions for your symposium visit.

Visiting the Region

July is the perfect time to visit the Colorado and Wyoming region. The daytime temps are in the 90's, but without the sweltering humidity found in other regions of the country.

Colorado and Wyoming also play host to a multitude of natural and historical attractions as well as gold medal fly fishing areas, professionally designed golf courses, and world famous shopping.

The closest large airport is Denver International Airport, just east of the metro Denver area and within an hour and 15 minutes of Rancho Terra Norté. If you are flying in with small dogs or where ticket prices are not an issue, Cheyenne has a nice airport that is only about 30 minutes from Rancho Terra Norté.

Overnight Camping

We do offer space for overnight campers. RV's must be self-contained and tents are welcome.
